Performance requirements for Level 1A:

• Play three memorized pieces

• 7 minute time limit

• Bring a legal copy of your music for the judges, measures numbered

Theory requirements for Level 1A:

• Identify and write note values and time signatures

• Add bar lines to a rhythm

• In 4-4 time, identify the number of beats for notes

• Identify treble and bass clefs

• Draw a keyboard showing F through B (11 white keys) and label each white key

• Know the names of the lines and spaces in both clefs

• Identify the intervals of a 2nd, 3rd, 5th in C, G, and F Major 5 finger patterns

• Identify and write C, G, and F Major five finger patterns, ascending only. Use accidentals.

• Mark the whole steps and half steps in a given C, G, or F Major five finger pattern

• Identify and write C, G, and F Major triads

• Know the meaning and symbols of: forte, piano, legato, staccato, staff, treble clef, bass clef, bar line, and measure.

• Identify any theory concepts for Level 1A in a musical example

• From multiple choices, identify the name of a person who writes music

Technique requirements for Level 1A:

• Play the following intervals starting on any white key: 2nd, 3rd, 5th

• Play any white key Major five finger pattern, hands separately or together, up and down, legato, at a steady beat.

• Play the tonic triad from any white key Major five finger pattern. Hands separately or together, broken up and down, legato, then blocked.

• Play the tonic cross-hand arpeggio from any Major white key five finger pattern, 2 or 4 octaves, up and down at a steady beat.

Aural awareness requirements for Level 1A:

• Identify whether two patterns are the same or different

• Identify repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, and 5ths from a Major 5 finger pattern

• Identify whether a second pitch is higher or lower than the first

• Identify whether you hear a Major five finger pattern or a broken triad

• Identify whether a Major melody is ascending or descending

• Identify whether a Major melody is moving by seconds (steps) or thirds (skips)

• Identify a broken vs blocked triad

• Identify whether a Major cross hand arpeggio is played loud or soft, with a crescendo or a diminuendo

• Repeat a 2-measure melody of 4 notes using repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, or 5ths

Sight-reading requirements for Level 1A:

• Clap or play on one key a 4-measure rhythm pattern

• Sight-read a single line, 4-measure melody using intervals of a 2nd, 3rd, and repeated notes and in C or G Major 5 finger patterns in treble or bass clef.
