LEVEL 1B

Performance requirements for Level 1B:

  • Play three memorized pieces

  • 7 minute time limit

  • Bring a legal copy of your music for the judges, measures numbered

Theory requirements for Level 1B:

  • Add bar lines to a rhythm

  • In , 2-4, 3-4, 4-4 time, identify the number of beats for notes

  • Identify sharp, flat, natural signs

  • Draw a keyboard showing F through B (11 white keys) and label each white key

  • Know the names of the lines and spaces in both clefs

  • Name black keys with either sharp or flat names

  • Identify the intervals of M2, M3, P4, P5 in C, G, F, D and A Major 5 finger patterns

  • Identify and write any Major white key five finger patterns. Use accidentals.

  • Identify and write c, g, or f minor five finger patterns

  • Mark the whole steps and half steps in any Major white key five finger pattern

  • Identify and write any white key Major triads

  • Identify and write c, g, or f minor triads

  • Know the meaning and symbols of: crescendo, diminuendo, mezzo forte, mezzo piano, repeat sign, octave sign, sharp, flat, and natural

  • Identify any theory concepts for Level 1B in a musical example

  • Know that a solo is played by only one person and that a duet is played by two people

Technique requirements for Level 1B:

  • Play the following intervals starting on any white key: M2, m3, M3, P4, P5

  • Play any white key minor five finger pattern, hands separately or together, up and down, legato, at a steady beat.

  • Play one-octave scales, up and down, hands separately or hands together: C Major, a natural minor

  • Play the tonic triad from any white key minor five finger pattern. Hands separately or together, broken up and down, legato, then blocked.

  • Play the tonic cross-hand arpeggio from any minor white key five finger pattern, 2 or 4 octaves, up and down at a steady beat.

Aural awareness requirements for Level 1B:

  • Identify whether two patterns are the same or different

  • Identify M2, M3, P4, P5 from a Major 5 finger pattern

  • Identify whether a Major scale is played with a crescendo or diminuendo

  • Identify whether a Major melody is ascending or descending, speeding up or slowing down

  • Identify a Major vs minor triad

  • Identify whether a Major cross hand arpeggio is ascending or descending

  • Repeat a 2-measure melody of 4 notes using repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, or 5ths

Sight-reading requirements for Level 1B:

  • Clap or play on one key a 4-measure rhythm pattern

  • Sight-read a single line, 4-measure melody using intervals of a 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and repeated notes and in C, F, or G Major 5 finger patterns in treble or bass clef.
