LEVEL 2

Performance requirements for Level 2:

  • Play three memorized pieces

  • 7 minute time limit

  • Bring a legal copy of your music for the judges, measures numbered

Theory requirements for Level 2:

  • Add bar lines to a rhythm

  • Complete rhythm patterns

  • Fill in the time signature

  • Identify sharp, flat, natural notes WITH correct placement of the accidental

  • Draw a keyboard showing F through B (11 white keys) and label each white key

  • Draw treble and bass clefs on a staff WITH correct placement

  • Know the names of the lines and spaces in both clefs, and ledger line notes up to 2 ledgers

  • Identify the intervals of M2, M3, P4, P5 in any white key Major 5 finger pattern

  • Identify and write half and whole steps on a keyboard. Name the notes.

  • Identify and write any Major white key five finger patterns. Use accidentals.

  • Identify and write D♭, E♭, F♯/G♭, A♭, B♭Major; and d, a, e, b minor five finger patterns

  • Mark the whole steps and half steps in D♭, E♭, F♯/G♭, A♭, B♭Major; and d, a, e, b minor five finger patterns

  • Identify and write these triads in root position: D♭, E♭, F♯/G♭, A♭, B♭Major; and d, a, e, b minor

  • Know the meaning and symbols of: da capo, fermata, accelerando, ritardando, fine, a tempo, common time, slur, tie

  • Identify any theory concepts for Level 2 in a musical example

  • Know that these instruments are keyboard instruments: piano, digital piano, harpsichord, and organ.

Technique requirements for Level 2:

  • Play the a M2, m3, M3, P4, P5 starting on D♭/C♯, E♭/D♯, G♭/F♯, A♭/G♯, B♭/A♯

  • Play D♭, E♭, G♭/F♯, A♭, B♭Major; and c♯, d♯/e♭, f♯, g♯, b♭minor five finger patterns, hands separately or together,up and down, piano legatoorforte staccato, at a steady beat.

  • Play one-octave scales, up and down, hands separately or hands together: G Major, e natural minor

  • Play the following triads: D♭, E♭, G♭/F♯, A♭, B♭Major; and c♯, d♯/e♭, f♯, g♯, b♭minor. Hands together, broken up and down, then blocked.

  • Play a 4-octave tonic cross-hand arpeggio in D♭, E♭, G♭/F♯, A♭, B♭Major; and c♯, d♯/e♭, f♯, g♯, b♭minor, legato, piano or forte. Up and down at a minimum 76bpm.

Aural awareness requirements for Level 2:

  • Identify whether two patterns are the same or different

  • Select the correct notation

  • Identify M2, m3, M3, P4, P5 from a Major 5 finger pattern

  • Identify whether a five finger pattern is Major or minor

  • Identify the dynamic pattern of an ascending and descending Major scale (piano - forte - piano OR forte - piano - forte)

  • Identify a Major vs minor triad

  • Identify whether two arpeggios are the same or different (major or minor)

  • Repeat a 2-measure melody of 5 notes using repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, or 5ths

Sight-reading requirements for Level 2:

  • Clap or play on one key a 4-measure rhythm pattern

  • Sight-read an 8-measure melody using intervals of a 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and repeated notes and in D, A, or F Major 5 finger patterns. Right hand plays melody and left hand plays an accompaniment consisting of tonic and dominant notes, one note per measure.
