Performance requirements for Level 3:

• Play three memorized pieces

• 7 minute time limit

• Bring a legal copy of your music for the judges, measures numbered

Theory requirements for Level 3:

• Add bar lines to a rhythm

• Complete rhythm patterns

• Fill in the time signature

• Identify sharp, flat, natural notes WITH correct placement of the accidental and their enharmonic names

• Draw a keyboard showing F through B (11 white keys) and label each white key

• Draw treble and bass clefs on a staff WITH correct placement

• Know the names of the lines and spaces in both clefs, and ledger line notes up to 2 ledger lines and 3 spaces

• Identify the intervals of M2, M3, P4, P5 from C, G, D, A, F (major or minor)

• Identify and write half and whole steps from a given note.

• Write the C, G, D Major scales, one octave, ascending, both on a staff and on a keyboard.

• Mark the whole and half steps in the scales of C, G, D Major on a staff or keyboard.

• Identify and write the key signatures for C, G, D Major in treble and bass clef.

• Identify and write the C and G Major triads in root position and inversions on a keyboard.

• Identify the root, 3rd, and 5th of any Major or minor white key triad in root position.

• Know the meaning and symbols of: fortissimo, pianissimo, inversion, damper pedal, allegro, andante, dolce, and simile.

• Identify any theory concepts for Level 3 in a musical example

• Match the correct biographical information for Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Technique requirements for Level 3:

• Play the a M2, m3, M3, P4, P5 starting on any note

• Play D, A, E Major, a, e harmonic minor, d natural minor scales, hands together, up and down, piano or forte, legato, at a minimum 80bpm.

• Play the following triads and their inversions: C, G, F Major, a, e minor. Hands separate or together, broken up and blocked.

• Play the following 2 octave arpeggios in C, G, F Major, a, e minor, staccato. Up and down at a minimum 63bpm.

• Play the primary triads (I-IV-V) in root position in the keys of C, G, and F Major. Hands together, broken and blocked.

Aural awareness requirements for Level 3:

• Identify whether two patterns are the same or different

• Select the correct notation

• Identify M2, m3, M3, P4, P5, P8

• Identify whether a melody is Major or minor

• Identify whether a one octave scale is played in paralle motion or contrary motion.

• Identify whether two triads in root position and inversions are Major or minor

• Identify the dynamic pattern of a two octave Major or minor arpeggios (piano-forte-piano or forte-piano-forte)

• Identify whether two chord progressions are the same or different.

• Repeat a 2-measure melody of 5 notes using repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, or 5ths

Sight-reading requirements for Level 3:

• Clap or play on one key a 4-measure rhythm pattern

• Sight-read a single-line RH or LH melody, or a melody that goes from LH to RH or from RH to LH. There may be an accompaniment consisting of tonic and dominant notes, one note per measure. The C, G, D, A, and F five finger patterns will be used. Sight reading will include repeated notes, tied notes, staccato and legato. Key signatures will be used.
