Performance requirements for Level 4:

• Play three memorized pieces

• 7 minute time limit

• Bring a legal copy of your music for the judges, measures numbered

Theory requirements for Level 4:

• Add bar lines to a rhythm

• Complete rhythm patterns

• Match rhythm patterns to their time signatures

• On a keyboard, write the enharmonic names of black keys and white key sharps and flats

• Identify and draw correct stem placement on quarter or half notes on the grand staff

• Identify the intervals of M2, m3, M3, P4, P5, M6 from C, G, D, A, F (major or minor)

• Write the letter names of the seven sharps as they appear in a key signature (FCGDAEB)

• Write the A, E Major and a, e natural minor scales, one octave, ascending, both on a staff and on a keyboard. Use whole notes and accidentals. Mark the half steps.

• Identify and write the key signatures for A, E Major and a, e minor in treble and bass clef.

• Identify relative Major and minor keys of: C/a, G/e.

• Identify and write the C, G Major, a and e minor triads in root position and inversions on a keyboard.

• Identify and write tonic (I) and dominant (V) triads in root position in F, C, G Major in both clefs. Use whole notes and accidentals, not key signatures.

• Transpose a 2-measure melody within a five-finger pattern up or down an octave into the other clef.

• Know the meaning and symbols of: adagio, moderato, tonic triad (I), dominant triad (V), relative minor, sequence, and rallentando.

• Identify any theory concepts for Level 4 in a musical example

• Match the correct biographical information for Robert Schumann and Dmitri Kabalevsky.

Technique requirements for Level 4:

• Play a M3, P4, P5, M6 starting on F, B, F♯, C♯

• Play F, B, F, B, F♯/G♭, C♯/D♭Major, a, e minor (in all 3 forms) scales, hands separate or together, ascending and descending, piano or forte, legato, at a minimum 60bpm.

• Play the following triads and their inversions: D, A, E Major, d, b minor. Hands separate or together, broken up and blocked. Play the root position piano, 1st inversion mezzo forte, 2nd inversion forte, top root position fortissimo

• Play the following 2 octave arpeggios in C, G, F Major, a, e minor, staccato. Up and down at a minimum 63bpm.

• Play the I-IV6/4-I-V6 or V6/5-I chord progression in C, G, F, D Major. Hands separately or together, forte or piano.

Aural awareness requirements for Level 4:

• Select the correct notation

• Identify M2, m3, M3, P4, P5, M6, P8

• After hearing a Major 5-finger pattern, identify in which order 4 tones are played.

• Identify whether two triads in root position and inversions are Major or minor

• Identify whether two chord progressions in a minor key are the same or different.

• Repeat a 2-measure melody of 6 notes using repeated notes, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, or 5ths

Sight-reading requirements for Level 4:

• Clap or play on one key a 4-measure rhythm pattern

• Sight-read an 8 measure hands together piece. RH will have a single line melody from a 5-finger pattern. The G, D, A Major or a, d harmonic minor five finger patterns will be used. Sight reading will include slurs, staccato, piano or forte. Key signatures will be used.
